Commitment & Accountability
October 14, 2024
DAILY VIDEO - Commitment and Accountability
To fully realize a culture of inclusion and belonging requires both leadership commitment and accountability to ourselves and others. Neither leadership nor accountability are top-down but rather shared responsibilities that each of us regardless of role, title or position can actively demonstrate. There are lots of examples and definitions for leadership. But at its most basic level leadership is the ability to influence others towards achieving a goal. Accountability is owning and accepting responsibility for one’s actions. When these are put in the context of diversity, equity and inclusion, it means we all have a part to play. All of us being leaders, modeling the behavior we want to see in others and influencing others towards the goal of a more inclusive society; and holding ourselves and others accountable to actions that help inspire and achieve that vision.
Belonging
October 15, 2024
DAILY VIDEO - Belonging (Segment)
Education and understanding the implications of unconscious bias is critical to cultivating a culture of inclusion and belonging. Belonging is that sense you get that you are a valued member of a community. When people feel that they are part of a community, they feel a sense of purpose.
Supplier Diversity
October 16, 2024
DAILY VIDEO - Supplier Diversity (Segment)
What is supplier diversity and why it is important?
Supplier diversity is a business practice that refers to the inclusion of businesses owned by diverse individuals or groups in the procurement of goods and services. A diverse supplier is generally defined as a business that’s at least 51% owned and operated by an individual that’s part of a traditionally underrepresented or underserved group. Common classifications are minority-owned business enterprises (MBEs), woman-owned business enterprises (WBEs), and small-business enterprises (SBEs). Businesses owned by other minority groups, such as LGBQT+, veterans, and persons with disabilities, may also be considered diverse suppliers.

Workplace Culture
October 17, 2024
Daily Video- Workplace Culture (Segment)
Establishing and maintaining a positive workplace culture means that everyone gets to experience a workplace that is inclusive and respectful. We also know that a good culture leads to increased safety and more productivity, providing higher value to our clients and allowing each and every worker to perform their best work.
Everyone must actively care for each other and ensure that everyone feels both physically and psychologically safe. Our work homes are where we spend our days, and they are where we gather the emotions, attitudes, and behaviors that we bring home to our families. We should expect to get a high level of respect and standard of care where we work. We must create workplaces which are equitable and meet the needs of all employees, industry-wide. We need to ensure workplaces are free of bias and harassment; where all are treated with respect; sites where our professional opinions are heard and valued and all have a seat at the table. Additionally, our clients appreciate and have come to expect a diverse and respectful workplace. This is not diversity on paper only, we need to foster collaborative and inclusive teams where everyone can do their best work and deliver for our clients.
Simply said: When it comes to workplace culture, it has to be practiced and lived daily. Everyone has to be about it and not just talk about it.
We want to hear your "Why"!

This week we are sharing #AISDJoy and #gratitude for some of our favorite events in October as we go into Election Day and the end of the year!
We are starting with our final event for #ConstructionInclusionWeek! We took a trip with students from berthasadlermeans to cirrusrocks as part of #CommunityEngagementDay. Our students were able to learn through hands on activities and ask questions directly to experts from the semiconductor industry, as well as our partners from wearevanir |stv_inc who are overseeing the modernization of Sadler Means YMLA as part of the 2022 Bond Program. These trailblazers were able to give the young women insight to working in architecture, engineering, and construction!
We are continuing the mission of the 2022 Bond as the most equitable bond in austinisd history by creating opportunities for students to explore careers in STEM. Spending time with our students is one of our favorite things to do and we hope to see students from our modernized campuses join the diverse workforce of construction related businesses and entrepreneurs!

A huge shoutout to our local and national #DEIB committees for organizing #ConstructionInclusionWeek activities.
Through Lunch N' Learns sessions, #ToolBoxTalks, and virtual Teams conversations, we've fostered space for open dialogue and learning.
Our Colorado DEIB committee brought together participants from our Colorado, Tennessee, and Arizona offices for a hybrid Lunch N' Learn (one room pictured here). Meanwhile, our California team organized hybrid Lunch N' Learns in San Diego and office-based table talks in Ontario.
We're grateful for the active participation of our #EmployeeOwners and trade partners in discussing important topics like Commitment & Accountability, Belonging, Supplier Diversity, Workplace Culture, and Community Engagement.
Our company vision, “WE Value People. WE Build Dreams.”, reflects our commitment to creating a healthier and more inclusive workplace where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to thrive.

The story time reading and author chat at the American Library in Karlsruhe, Germany was nothing short of amazing! Kids from different ages and backgrounds were able to hear all about my life and career - from growing up in New Orleans to hopping on a plane to visit them in Germany. This celebration of literacy during the Frankfurt Book Fair was also a great way to end Construction Inclusion Week! I just had to top it all off with a brezel!
Thanks to the generosity of The Friends of the American Library, all attendees took home autographed and personalized copies of Celeste Saves the City or Celeste Tunnels Underground in English or German! Also, big thanks to Julia Arnold, Karla Nivens, and all the library staff and volunteers for helping with this event!

Thank you to the agc_ma for joining us on site at the future home of Franklin Cummings Tech (FCT) in celebration of Construction Inclusion Week! We were proud to have Sheryce Hearns, our Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, share a bit about how we've teamed up with One Way Development, Inc to bring this new campus to life.
Located in Roxbury's Nubian Square, FCT's upcoming building will provide a state-of-the-art learning environment for students pursuing careers in technology and trades, answering the demand for diverse talent in the construction industry.
With window walls looking into labs and a live Automotive Garage where the public is invited to have their vehicles repaired by students, this 68k sqft facility will be a bridge between the school and community, which has long been the center of African American culture in Boston.

Keep going and going! Reflecting on Construction Inclusion Week (CIW), which holds a unique significance and many-many opportunities for intentional change. Let’s continue to use the momentum and resources from last week:
•
Day 1: Leadership Commitment - Ensuring company leadership actively advocates for diversity.
•
Day 2: Workplace Culture - Building cultures that promote respect and belonging.
•
Day 3: Supplier Diversity - Recognizing the value of diverse suppliers in strengthening the industry.
•
Day 4: Jobsite Culture - Cultivating inclusive behaviors on-site.
•
Day 5: Community Engagement - Empowering and involving communities in the industry’s growth.

As the population continues to age, the #constructionindustry must unite and intentionally develop robust strategies for recruiting and retaining skilled talent. Effective workforce planning is essential to address the impending challenges of job placement, which are likely to intensify as the number of available candidates diminishes.
By investing in training programs, fostering a culture of inclusion, and implementing incentives that appeal to younger workers, we can ensure a steady flow of qualified professionals into the industry and sustain its growth for the future. #WorkforceDevelopment #ConstructionInclusionWeek

To close out #ConstructionInclusionWeek, we wanted to share some powerful words from our Director of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Impact, Elizabeth Wambui, along with pictures from a student tour this morning, hosted by Superintendent Matt Wilder, at our Crocker Elementary School jobsite.
To highlight the ongoing importance of our work, Liz shares, "After all we’ve learned and accomplished during Construction Inclusion Week, you may be wondering—what’s next? Each of us has an important role to play in making our firm and industry more diverse and inclusive. Every day brings new opportunities to ensure that everyone around us feels a sense of belonging.
We are fortunate to work in an exciting industry driven by innovation, creativity, and hard work. As we continue our work, let’s also consider how we can inspire and develop future builders. Take time to share your experiences with the young people in your life. If possible, invite them to visit a job site or the office to see your work firsthand.
Look for ways to connect with community partners who offer opportunities to engage with students or individuals seeking a career change. Together, we can—and must—do everything in our power to make our industry more diverse, inclusive, and welcoming, building a brighter future for everyone."
Liz’s words remind us that the work of fostering diversity and inclusion is ongoing. Today’s photos reflect her message: creating welcoming spaces, sharing experiences, and inspiring the next generation to see the possibilities in our industry. By making our sites more inclusive today, we’re shaping a brighter, more diverse future for tomorrow. #diversity #inclusion #studentengagement

At Wilks you will often hear us use the phrase "Built Right. Built to Last" For us, that's employing and valuing the unique talents that our construction teams bring to the table. We believe that a strong foundation begins with a skilled and dedicated team, building to last starts from the ground up. Thank you to our teams for turning our vision into reality and building a lasting legacy with every project.
Construction Inclusion Week was a huge success! Our sites came together for ally walks, cultural cookoffs, and meaningful discussions on accountability, belonging, and community engagement.

💡 Let’s Build on Big Thinking 💡
Last week was Construction Inclusion Week. In collaboration with the CARE Construction Safety Program, AGC MA hosted its second annual Stand Down for Respect event at the Boston College High School Cadigan Family Wellness Center Project. During the event, construction was paused to emphasize the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the construction industry.
Thank you to #LKCO's VP of Risk Management, Jason Edic, and AGC MA's Safety Director, Chris Ziegler, for leading this important conversation. We also extend our gratitude to all the tradespeople and project teams across our job sites who continue to demonstrate respect.

Thank you to everyone who took part in Construction Inclusion Week last week! Our crews, like the one pictured from PCI Portland's OHSU Hospital Expansion Project, gathered for toolbox talks to discuss important topics aimed at creating a culture of care. At PCI, we understand that fostering a respectful workplace is a shared responsibility, and we’re grateful for everyone’s commitment to this goal.
As we move forward, let’s continue practicing respect in our daily interactions and building an environment where everyone can thrive. Together, we can create a better workplace for all. 🦺❤️#ConstructionInclusionWeek #CultureOfCare #RespectInclusion
Last week, we celebrated Construction Inclusion Week by creating a digital heritage map. Each point represents the diverse backgrounds of our team members, highlighting where they’re from, where they live, and their family roots. These stories remind us that our industry's strength is derived from the unique perspectives and experiences that shape it. #ConstructionInclusionWeek #CIW2024
Last week, on Day 2 of #ConstructionInclusionWeek, our Community & Citizenship team coordinated a special Employee Resource Group session at turner_nyc with the theme of Belonging. Teams from our Philadelphia and New Jersey Business Units visited HQ to hear from Senior Leaders and CEO Peter Davoren. It was an exciting day of collaboration, learning, and celebrating inclusion!
#ConstructionInclusionWeek #TurnerConstruction #Belonging
I’ve spent 16 years in this industry because I love construction.
A love that pushed me to get my engineering license and going to law school (Go SunDevils). But if I’m being honest, I’m not sure construction has always loved me back.
As a Black woman, there have been times—sometimes whole projects—where I’ve felt like an outsider.
Even with recognitions like sfbjnews Diverse Voice or being the only person in enr.news history to receive the Top 25 Newsmaker and Top 20 Under 40 awards in the same year, that nagging feeling of being on the outside hasn’t fully gone away.
That’s why _agreenertomorrow created Breaking Barriers, a docuseries highlighting women leaders in construction. These stories need to be heard, and more importantly, seen.
Belonging is more than gender or race. It’s being accepted for who you are, valued for your unique perspective, and able to work in your zone of genius, freely.
We all want that.
At the end of the day, everyone wants to feel like they belong.
Every week.
In the four episodes of Breaking Barriers we’ve already wrapped, women leaders are showing how they’re reshaping their companies by putting people first.
These women have shifted from a project-centered mindset to a people-centered approach. Transforming the culture of construction by how they do business—and yes, it’s paid off!
For me, Construction Inclusion Week is about creating that sense of belonging. It’s a reminder that we’re not just building structures (or in my case tearing them down)—we’re building cultures where everyone can thrive.

Pictured in October 2023 CommUNITY members: Janice Clark, Darade Collins, and Johnathan Brock attended the NMSDC (National Minority Supplier Development Council) Annual conference in Baltimore, MD. While there they engaged with several MBE (Minority Business Enterprise), WBE (Women Business Enterprise), and VBE (Veteran Business Enterprise) businesses as part of our effort to build partnerships in the communities we serve on behalf of our utility customers. The event is an opportunity to pursue strategic partnerships that foster growth opportunities for emerging businesses and untapped markets and help build an ecosystem where everyone can benefit. We’re looking forward to returning next week!

Construction Inclusion Week x ACE Day of Action | Day Five - Community Engagement
At Clune Construction, we are proud to support the acementor, a national initiative that inspires high school students to explore careers in the AEC industry. Each year, Clune team members from coast to coast volunteer their time to mentor future leaders, guiding them through mock projects, hosting site tours and providing a firsthand look at what it means to work in construction. These hands-on experiences help shape the next generation of industry professionals and ensure a bright future for the workforce.
Today’s Construction Inclusion Week theme of Community Engagement highlights the importance of giving back and fostering meaningful connections in our communities. At Clune, we know that investing in young talent not only strengthens the future of our industry but also builds lasting bonds within the communities we serve. Together with ACE, we’re building tomorrow’s leaders and empowering our communities to thrive.

We were proud to celebrate Construction Inclusion Week at Adolfson & Peterson Construction. Construction Inclusion Week is a vital opportunity for us to reflect on and reinforce our core values of inclusion and diversity.
This past week, we spent time thinking deeply about the personal significance of inclusion and how it shapes our work environment. Inclusion is more than a principle—it’s a commitment that drives our success and fosters a culture where every team member feels valued and empowered.
In all regions this week, we discussed topics including commitment and accountability, belonging, supplier diversity, workplace culture and community engagement.
